26th July 2016 / Tuesday
Sadly this was our last day in Palm Springs and I was miserable about leaving as it had been so idyllic and just what the doctor ordered after the intensity of everything prior. We had vowed to get up early to make the most of the later checkouts that America seems to have. Since our curtains were super light it was pretty easy to wake up naturally early so it was around 7ish we started to get up.
We got to the pool just before 8am and ordered some breakfast – the food was so good at the Ace, particularly the breakfast foods which is totally our deal.
We chose to lie on the giant circular daybeds and it was amazing – I wished we’d lay on it the day before but oh well.
We ate breakfast, food coma-ed and then would occasionally dunk ourselves in the pool. We even played some water volleyball – pretty bad volleyball but volleyball nonetheless. It was magical and was making it even harder to think about leaving.
Around 11.30 we begrudgingly headed back to the room to pack – since we hadn’t unpacked much due to living in bikinis it was pretty easy to get it all together. We checked out and got on the road after a quick detour at a 7-eleven for snacks. It was gross being back in an air conditioned car after being able to breathe normal air for a couple of days but we perservered.
The drive was kind of dismal and we got some typically shitty LA traffic on the way in. This last leg we were staying in Beverly Hills at the Sixty which was the most expensive accommodation of the trip but still cheaper than staying in Santa Monica which is where we were wanting to stay.
We arrived around 3pm but our room wasn’t quite ready so we went up to the rooftop pool and got a couple of complimentary cocktails and lazed on a lounger. We then went to our room – which we were happy to discover was on the top floor and has a pretty sweet view. The hotel is really nice and on the boutique style with only 8 floors. Also Beverly Hills is a really nice area and after having to drive through parts of Hollywood earlier in the day we were grateful for all the casual white wealth we saw everywhere. I’m not so into the grittiness of the Hollywood streets that’s for sure.
We didn’t have to long to hang around in our room as we had tickets to go see Flight of the Conchords at the Greek Theatre in Griffith Park at 7.30 – also knowing about LA traffic we wanted to ensure we had loads of time as we really had no idea what we were doing. Luckily we had Emily – our Garmin GPS navigator. Well, sometimes luckily. She kind of took us on a few routes we think that weren’t the best necessary and we had some choice words to say to her – however in this instance we got to the park totally fine.
We had pre booked parking onsite which was a great idea as it was super easy and organised and also very close to the theatre. It was pretty expensive though but hey, the other options were not great. The Greek theatre was really amazing and we were pumped to see the show as it was a really good energy. It’s an outdoor venue (a natural amphitheatre) surrounded by grassy hills and it was lovely to see some greenery again after the desert starkness.
The show started late but it was a sold out house and everyone was in good spirits. Arj Barker was the opening act and did a funny stand up routine before he brought on Flight of the Conchords. They were hilarious and more than once I actually got the giggles and my face started to hurt. They brought out Murray, Dave as well as Mel at different times to the rapturous delight of the audience. They really love Murray.
Afterwards we headed home to our last ‘home’ in the US before we fly back into winter. The bed was plushy and we tried to watch some to on the 55 inch to (yes!!!) before we crashed out. I still wish we’d had another night at the Ace but if we are in LA, Beverly Hills is pretty good.
