Today we rode the subway for the first time!!!
It’s hot as hell down there, and a wee bit confusing, but once we found a good mapping app, we managed to pretty much nail it from the get go.
What they don’t tell you about subways, is how long you have to walk down in the stations to get to the right platform. It might be 2 mins to get from somewhere to the subway station, but it could still be another 5 mins walking underground, up and down stairs, to get to the platform. (Well, that’s what it feels like.)
Also, Grand Central is crazy. Millions of people walking in totally different directions.
Anyways, back to today…
We started off with brekkie at an Israeli place called Delictica. They did scrambled egg sandwiches (New York does everything as a sandwhich), which were yummy and satisfied our desperate needs for an eggy brekkie.
From there we caught the subway to MoMA, with a bit of mosying along the way.
After the usual altercation between a service member and Ju (a lesson in silent attitude retort) we finally got our audio tour thingeemabob and were off around the exhibits.
It was all pretty amazing, although we were still overwhelmed from doing The Met yesterday, so it was slow going in some parts.
I got hit on by one of the security guys who I thought was following me because I was taking my photos dangerously close to the architectural models. I mean, I was, but he let me off that and just wanted to know my IG account, because apparently I’m so beautiful.
I told him it was private and scooted through the rest of the exhibit so fast that Ju thought I was running away from her.
Eventually we got kicked out around 4.30pm at closing time, and we’d literally only just made it to the classics level. I saw the Andy Warhol Campbell Soup prints, just when we were hustled out. Ju didn’t even make it that far, and instead spent her last five minutes at MoMA in the loo.
From there we made it across Uptown to Central Park. Still using our NY Pass, we got bike hires for two hours and cycled the perimeter, with a few stops for photos, cute squirrels and waffles with strawberries, banana and Hershey’s chocolate.
Central Park is stunning, and it was so nice being in amongst all the greenery. Since it was the weekend as well, it was closed to vehicular traffic, which made it even better.
We also saw our first squirrel! Goddamn they are cute as fuck.
After the waffle Ju got the worst stomach stitch, so we had to sit down on one of the rocks for half an hour while she tried to figure out if life was worth living.
We managed to make it back to the hotel room, and took a wee break to recover from another big day!
For dinner we subway’d (grammar?!) to the West Village, and had a NY 10.15pm dinner at Blossom. And again, Ju got drunk from her one drink.
We started to walk home, all the way from downtown to midtown, and about half way there I got such a bad foot blister. It was hero to zero in 10 paces, so we did another NY first and hailed a cab.
We then had a debacle with the taxi driver on where to take us…we were saying East 39th St, and he was conviced we were saying Eighth Ave. We both kept saying East louder and louder, he kept replying Eighth louder and louder, until we were literally driving around in circles. We FINALLY came up with a solution and said Madison and 39th…and voila, we were there! The poor cab driver had to turn off the meter a couple blocks away, to make up for it…so we have him a generous / humourous tip.
Another big day in NYC ended with a bit of work, half cut, and I fell off the chair in front of the laptop.
Tashy. x
